Summer and Congress Streets

Neighborhood: Downtown/South Boston

Description: Summer and Congress Streets connect downtown Boston to the South Boston Waterfront and the Convention Center. The corridors are critical to regional and international tourism as they link South Station and the Greenway to maritime facilities and cultural landmarks such as the Institute for Contemporary Art and the Boston Children’s Museum. The project will improve safety by slowing vehicular speeds, improved crossings, new street lights and signal equipment. Accessible and wider sidewalks and bike lanes will also be installed. The project combines 21st century amenities with sustainable design and best practices for material selection and installation including efforts to recharge depleted groundwater and reclaim storm water for irrigation of street trees.
